How does Mediation Differ from Arbitration or Negotiation?

In a negotiation, the parties are in control of both the process and the outcome; in an arbitration, the parties can set the parameters of the arbitration before the hearing, but in the hearing it is the arbitrator who controls both the process and the outcome. In a mediation, however, the mediator controls the process, but the parties control the outcome.
